How to contact a car owner without their phone number

A car is blocking your way, has its lights on, or something looks wrong, and there is no number on it. Here is what you can do, and what car owners can do so they are easy to reach.

If you need to reach the owner of a car

1. Look for a way to contact the owner on the car itself. Check the windscreen and the back window. Some cars have a QR code sticker. Scanning it lets you share your location and alert the owner without seeing their number.
2. Ask nearby people. In a housing society, the security guard or the society office often knows which flat a car belongs to. In a shop or office block, ask reception or the building manager.
3. Do not damage or move the car. Do not try to push it, scratch it or let air out. That can turn a small problem into a legal one.
4. If it is a real emergency, call 112. Someone hurt, a fire, or a dangerous situation is a matter for the emergency services, not for tracking down an owner.

Looking up a registration number online generally shows vehicle details, not a phone number, so it does not usually help you reach the owner.
