A car is parked in front of your gate: what you can do

It is frustrating and it happens often. Here is a calm order of steps that usually gets the car moved without an argument.

Steps, in order

  1. Check the car for a way to reach the owner. Look at the windscreen and rear window for a note, a phone number or a QR code sticker. If there is a QR code, scan it, share your location and ask for the car to be moved. The owner is alerted on WhatsApp and you never see their number.
  2. Ask around. Neighbours, the security guard or the society office often know whose car it is. In a shop or office block, ask reception.
  3. Wait a few minutes before escalating. Many owners are simply somewhere nearby.
  4. Note the details. Take a photo showing the car, the number plate and how it blocks you. It helps if you have to complain.
  5. If it stays blocked, contact the local traffic police. Obstruction is something they handle. What they can do, and how quickly, differs between cities.

What not to do

If it is an emergency

If someone needs urgent help, such as a medical situation or a blocked ambulance route, call 112 rather than looking for the owner.

Prevent it next time

Most of these standoffs last long only because nobody can reach the owner. If you park in shared places, a parking QR code sticker on your own car means you can be reached the same way. And read how to contact a car owner without their phone number for more options.

Questions

Can I move a car that is blocking my gate?

Do not push, lift or tow someone else's vehicle. Try to find the owner first, and if that fails contact the traffic police.

Can I find the owner from the number plate?

Registration lookups generally give vehicle details, not a phone number, so they rarely help you reach the owner.

What if the owner never comes back?

Contact the local traffic police. They can deal with a vehicle that is obstructing a gate or road.
